You May Call Me Berry Old Fashioned

The beauty of the Old Fashioned is just the starting point. Yes, the classic is great, but the addition of blackberries, star anise, and  sage give it oh so much more depth. This is a well balanced cocktail with the brightness of the berries, earthiness of the sage and slight licorice notes from the star anise (don’t worry the anise isn’t overpowering).  I also have a sugar free keto-friendly version below.

BLACKBERRY SAGE SMASH/OLD FASHIONED 6 blackberries 3/4 ounce sage simple syrup 3 dashes Dashfire Vintage Orange No.1 Bourbon Barrel Aged Bitters  (Agostora or Peychaud are good too) 1 1/2 ounces quality bourbon (I like Rowan’s Creek) Cracked ice Fresh sage leaf and blackberry for garnish

SAGE SIMPLE SYRUP 15 fresh sage leaves 1 whole star anise 2 cups sugar or 2 teaspoons stevia powder or liquid concentrate 2 cups filtered water

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Bring the water to a boil. Add sugar or 2 teaspoons liquid stevia concentrate, stir to dissolve. Add the sage leaves, and star anise, let the infusion boil for about 60 seconds. Remove pan from heat, let steep for 30 minutes. Transfer the cooled syrup through a mesh strainer into an airtight jar or container. 2. In a martini shaker muddle blackberries, add sage simple syrup, bitters, and bourbon; add ice; stir. In an Old Fashioned glass add cracked ice to within 1 inch of rim. Place a cocktail strainer on the shaker. Pour through a fine mesh strainer. Garnish with a sage leaf and blackberry. ENJOY!
